Last week, bowel cancer patient Jodie Elisara managed to fight through the side effects chemotherapy treatment and deliver a speech to Queensland Parliament, advocating for action in order to reduce colonoscopy wait times.
 
She also used the opportunity to highlight the fact that ‘you are never too young’ for bowel cancer’ and it is not ‘an old man’s disease.
 
Jodie was accompanied by one of her biggest fans and Peer-to-Peer Buddy, Sarah Chaundy and had the audience captivated.

In his mid-30s, David Wakerley started to notice blood in his bowel movements every so often.

The happily married, father of three didn’t experience any pain or other symptoms suggestive of bowel cancer, but when the bleeding continued he knew he should see his GP to find out what might be causing it.

“Life was happening, kids, school, work, everything was full blast,” said David as he recalled his experience.

Young Survivors’ Week is an international week dedicated to people under the age of 50, who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Although bowel cancer is often considered to be ‘an old person’s disease’, recent research has shown bowel cancer rates are rising in younger people.

In October 2015, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer.
 
Almost two years later, I finished active treatment.
 
During that time, I spent over 514 hours having chemotherapy drugs mainlined into my heart.
 
I'm one of the lucky ones; lucky because I had symptoms.
